I. Addiction
According to an analytical report on teenagers’ online use of video games in U.S, teenagers spent over 140 hours/month and an average of 3 to 4 hours/day which many experts classifying as “abnormal behavior” To illustrate this, children and teenagers’ video game addiction has been found to make perceptible personality characteristics, especially for “variables of sensation seeking and boredom” .
The sensation seeking is divided to two parts: High Sensation Seeker (HSS) and Low Sensation Seeker (LSS). Many researchers have found that the HSS group prefers to “pursue sensory rewards” to gain satisfaction. Other studies also found a correlation between sensation seeking and drug abuse, smoking, playing video games, sexual activates and crimes . Another “variable” for game addiction is boredom. According to Farrell (1990), students who experienced boredom were not coping with school life and were always have school suspension and drug abuse . But is there any consequence to be addicted playing video games?
II. Increasing aggressivity
Many scientists and psychologists believe that addiction to violence playing video games would increase aggressivity in young people and adults. According to the National Coalition on Television Violence (NCTV), which is another organization that developed a system to rate the violent materials in video games, there has been a stable increase in the number of video games with violent theme. The NCTV realized through a survey in 1990 that 40 of the 47 top rated Nintendo had violence as a theme. In addition, the NCTV realized that there is a connection between children playing violent video games and later aggressive behavior Not only the NCTV realized this conclusion but other many researchers also concluded that there is a harmful effect from playing video games and they reached the same point as the NCTV that there is a short-term relationship between playing video games and increasing aggressive behavior. Additionally, many researchers found that most of the games environments were based on plots of violent, aggression and gender favoritism. This kind of situation could make the players of video games practice the violent acts in video games that may contribute to aggressive behavior
III. Negative views
· “Over-dependence on video games could foster social isolation, as they are often played alone”.
-Many games only offer an arena of weapons, killings, kicking, stabbing and shooting.
-More often games do not offer action that requires independent thought or creativity.
-Games can confuse reality and fantasy.
-In many violent games, players must become more violent to win. In "1st person" violent video -games the player may be more affected because he or she controls the game and experiences ---the action through the eyes of his or her character.
-“Academic achievement may be negatively related to over-all time spent playing video games”.
